I read a thing a while ago that suggested part of this is because Gen Z came along when computers were, like, finally past the point of constantly making drastic changes every 6 months. So for Gen Z, you get a new computer, it works pretty much like every other computer you’ve ever had; maybe the volume button is in a different place but that’s about it.
Meanwhile, most Millenials grew up going from “the OS is stored on a 5in floppy that has to be locked in place with a physical switch every time you turn the machine on” to “now the OS stays on the machine and doesn’t have to be loaded every time but you need individual CDs to run every program” to “physical media? not on my watch!” So we all grew up having to re-learn how a god damn computer works every 6 months (without being able to just look it up on the internet easily if at all) and the only way to do was to fiddle around with it until we figured shit out.
So we have this literal decade or more of experience with troublshooting technology (and the confidence that comes with it) while Gen Z doesn’t.
They don’t fiddle around because they either don’t know how or aren’t confident they can fiddle around without breaking something or some combination of the two and it’s not really their fault. That being said: they have the same internet we do now so they could LEARN to fiddle around with shit until it works, and not doing so is a choice.
Seriously, guys, please for the love of little baby ducks, go learn some basic troubleshooting skills
